We collaborate with artists, communities and organizations to build capacity, create opportunities and drive social change. Curated by Footscray Community Arts center, our core programs are lengthy term, strategic and multidisciplinary with a range of outcomes throughout the year. These programs aim for high social impact. We labor with artists and organizations to partner, present, collaborate, deliver and yield innovative arts projects, industry professional development and community engaged programs. Through our Artists and Companies in Residence program, we encourage creative developments, office space, production and presentation of fresh works and rehearsal space. For over 40 years, FCC has been an innovative, artistic and cultural hub in the heart of Footscray. Our program, impact and audiences have reached beyond the local area into Melbourne, Australia and overseas. FCC has received prevalent recognition for its pioneering practice in community arts and cultural development. FCC was established in 1974 by a group of artists and community activists with a clear agenda of access for all. This group of founders and pioneers successfully advocated to state and federal funding bodies for an arts center in Footscray, around an identified need to work with marginalized and disadvantaged communities. At the time, the creation of a community arts center, in response to social and cultural issues, was unique in Australia and outstanding for Melbourne’s west, which was lacking in basic infrastructure, transport systems and recreation facilities. Since opening, more than two million people have visited FCC or participated in our programs, events, activities and workshops, with mighty representation from socially disadvantaged or marginalized communities. The redevelopment of our facility in 2010 significantly enhanced the aptitude for innovative and community led labor to be performed or presented in the region, as healthy as providing FCC with the tools to expand and sustain our operations for the following stage of our development.
